Volatility means prices move. It is normal. The question is whether your plan assumed those swings.

In depth

Markets go up and down even when the economy is fine. Headlines often treat every move as a crisis. For long-term investors, the more useful questions are: do I still believe in my mix, do I have enough cash for near-term needs, and am I taking risk I can live with? If volatility leads you to sell at lows, the damage is often permanent—not because markets never recover, but because you may not participate in the recovery.

Key points

  1. A plan should assume some bad years.
  2. Cash needs belong outside volatile assets.
  3. Reactions matter as much as returns.

Not investment advice

Articles and calculators on this site are for learning. They are not a recommendation to buy or sell any security, and they are not tailored to your personal situation.

  1. Education vs personal advice. If you work with an adviser, that relationship has its own agreements and disclosures. Reading here does not replace that.
  2. No outcome guarantees. Markets are uncertain. We write to explain ideas and trade-offs—not to promise returns or timing.
